Mental Case 2 — Flashcards for the Serious Student App Reviews

Not great with longer text blocks

This app has support for multiple facits to an answer, audio, video, and what not but I don’t use them. My material mainly has answers in larger text blocks and MC does not deal with those very well. Regardless of anaswer length it tries to fit it all onto one card. MC will make the text as small as necessary to fit the whole answer on one card. If I have too much text it is unreadable. Developers say they are working on a solution but I think this is low priority for them. MC also has some fancy features where by you can mark various stacks for long term retention and it will schedule them into your regular study. In theor this is great. If I were diciplined about retaining knowledge in a field I might even use this. But my actual usage is to simply study a stack at a time, usually the material I’m studying at the time. I find some of the features related to this long term retention to be confusing. I may try an alternate applicaiton.

Great technical service

I have been using Mental Case for medical school for over a year and I is one of my favorite tools hands down. I have over 8,000 flashcards and I use this app literally every single day. I recently incorrectly shut down my computer and corrupted my mentalcase app, and was extremely worried I would lose my data and wouldn’t be able to use the app again. However, the technical support staff worked closely with me and fixed all of my issues. I couldn’t be happier!

Great

At first, I had trouble setting things up. It was frustrating. However, now I cannot recall exactly what the problems were. I use Mental Case solely for French vocabulary. Studying is easy and thorough. I have recommended this app to friends.

Buggy Sync Functionality and Crashes

The app has many great features, and I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately the most important and innovative feature is a mess. The sync functionality is really slow, often doesn’t work at all freezing midway, or crashes the application… …and when attempting to apply a new template to a stack, the application crashes…

Save your money and look elsewhere

After reading the description and many good reviews I purchased this app for my mac and also purchased the app for my iPad. Yes, that is right, you have to buy two seperate apps. The description said that you can easily sync your flashcards between devices. Long story short: this is simply not true. The stacks on my ipad do not copy over to the mac and the ones on the mac do not copy over to the iPad. Both apps say that they sync, but they do not. I even tried the suggested route of using file sharing through itunes to open stacks created on my mac onto the iPad. This does not work either. I have wasted money and a lot of time trying to get this app to share flashcards. If you intend to only use this app on one device and only one device and never share stacks between computer and iPad (or iPhone) then this app would be good for you. However, anyone who uses more than one device (iPad, mac, iPhone) should look elsewhere. Buyer beware or you will have buyers remorse like I do.

Does not open anymore. Now I cant study any of my notes.

I have been having a problem opening the app after updating. Contacted customer service many times. No response.

Was working like a champ, then I updated...

App wont open, says "Mental Case quit unexpectedly” upon startup. Tried restarting, even upgraded the OS. Loved this app on my iPhone, purchased this one thinking it would be just as good. Didnt even get a week of service out of it. Folks, until this update is fixed, dont bother. I hope I can write a better review soon. I need this app to work.

One of my most rewarding purchaises ever!

First, let me assure you that I have no affiliation with this company what so ever. I simply love this product. It syncs flaughlessly across all my devices using icloud. It is the first thing i recommand to my College students. With this program I can learn key commands, languages, and anything else I want to memorize. The program let’s me even creat audio and picture flash cards. It’s fantastic. Everything can be organized in folders. The training feature is fanominally helpful. Yes, you have to spend a little bit of money, and everybody wants everything for free nowadays, (differet discussion), but I strongly suggest that you do yourself a favour and get this program, if you are serious about improving your brain power!

UPDATE ERROR _ DO NOT UPDATE!

I have been using this App with no issues what so ever 2-3 times per week. I downloaded the update and now it wont work at all! Will not open - I have hundreds of flash cards on this program and now I cant even retrieve them so I can safely unload and reload the app!!

Must have app, but get crashes

This app is an absolute must have, if you take school seriously, but it does crash on my macbook pro occasionally. If you are a serious student, don’t skip out on the money. Still, if you are in my classes do not get this, because I want to set the curve. Thanks!

Don’t do it!

I have been going through my first semester in medical school and used mental case as my main study tool. Two days ago it glitched, crashed my computer, and now the 1400 or so flashcards that I had painstakingly made are gone forever. This is after a weekend of being on the phone with apple support just to get my computer working again. Finals are two weeks away and I can’t imagine being in a worse position to study from. I have no notes and will have to start again from scratch.

Sooooooooooooo much room for improvement.

Trying to study right now, Im hitting the wall with frustration over how difficult they made to navigate this thing and the little glitches that pop up. An ok app, but could be so much better, and should be considering I paid 30 bucks for it.

keeps crashing

when viewing at full screen and trying to resize the stacks. it crashes everytime…. never fails to crash. please fix this update becuase i’d hate to place a black mark on this (what was wonderful before update) app. thanks.

Company scrapped this app because it had too many problems

This was the email I received after paying for this app on OSX and iOS. In short, they acknowledge that the program had far too many problems to bother correcting. Instead they built something new to charge $40 for. I have no reason to believe that they will honor a reasonable expectation to improvements in a new app based on this precedent. "From a distance, it may not have seemed like much was happening to Mental Case, but the truth lay elsewhere. We have been working on Studies for somewhere between 18 months and 2 years. The whole app has been overhauled, the UI refreshed, and the pain points addressed (*cough* nobody mention sync). Studies for OS X is an app we are proud of. And, of course, we are working on the iOS app. Two major updates at once was just too much, so we decided on a controlled release, first for the Mac, and following in the not too distant future with an iOS app. The two will sync up via iCloud, and many of the same improvements in the Mac app will also come to iOS. Mental Case will remain available for a while in the Mac App Store. This is to allow us to offer bug fixes for existing customers, as well as support those who cannot live without an iOS app until Studies for iOS is available. You can migrate your data from Mental Case to Studies when you first launch the app. Your original Mental Case data remains unchanged. If youre a Mental Case user from way back, thank you for the support over the years, and — new customer or old — we really hope you enjoy Studies and that it helps you achieve things you never thought within your grasp. You can read more at the Studies web site."

An app with many flaws

I have been using this app for several years. The transition from the first to the second version was terrible. And the sync between different devices has never worked. And now they are offering this under a new name, “Studies”, without even an upgrade option for existing users. Not a company I would trust anymore.

Glitchy with no Fixes

**Before I begin, I just spent $11 for Flashcard Hero on my Mac & iPhone & it is syncing & working fantastically!** If this app worked like it should work all the time, it would receive 4-5 stars BUT I bought & used their original program that had many issues syncing. When they put out this version I purchased it assuming it would be different & would function as they stated it would. It does not… Syncing is hit or miss, & lets face it, whats the point of making flashcards if you can’t study them out in the world, away from your laptop when you find you need to ‘waste’ time… I’ve now purchased this for my MacBook, iPad, & iPhone & even after multiple updates, they can’t seem to figure out how to perfect the syncing. I also want to point out that their programs get more & more expensive & from what I can see from their new app “Studies”, it appears to be the exact same thing as Mental Case 2 with a different look… $40+???? Plus more for the other apps that make it useful… If I wasn’t halfaway through a course, I would switch to a different program...

Sketchy Company

Forces you to an overpriced upgrade every few years…Mental Case…Mental Case 2…Studies. For the price of the app (around $39), would expect not to pay for regualar upgrades. Mental case 2 syncing from computer app to iPhone app no longer works.
