Mental Case 2 — Flashcards for the Serious Student App Reviews

Full of crashes

Dont waste your money folks, the App crashes when going full-screen. Whats the point of spending money on a flashcard app like this when you could get Anki for free? The only thing Anki doesnt do that Mental Case alleges it can do is full-screen, "pretty" presentation. And that full-screen mode doesnt work. What a waste.

A great investment in your education!

This app is amazing! It is exactly what I was looking for to help me study for my exams. It is fast and easy to use. You can organize your notes in any way you want. The drag and drop feature makes organizing notes quick and easy. This app is a great investment towards your education and is worth every penny.

Downward Spiral

While Mental Case remains one of the best flash-card programs available for the Mac, it has over the past few years, lost its edge. What was once a slick, minimalist and easy on the eyes program has morphed into a clunky, flashy, and tacky program more along the lines of the Java heavy "Flash My Brain". It has become weighed down by its own gimmicky interface elements such as the neat, but useless book-interface to view cards. The more practical spreadsheet interface lacks functionality. For instance, you cannot type in any text that requires a carriage-return, since doing so will immediately exit the input editing mode. Mental Case has beocme so heavy with its tacky visual elements that I often dread openning it to even enter new data. Its sole saving grace is the iphone version which retains version 1s slick, fast, and unobtrusive interface.

Useful app

Using it since around a year now and I am done with my note cards to prepare my exams! Useful, well organised, particularly like where you can capture a picture from the web or pdf / ppt to do quick rounds of questions for physiopathology class. Fun to use in study group.

Awesome study app

Im a 4th year biology student which means there is a lot to memorize. Ive worked this app into my studying and the gains have been invaluable. My exam marks are improving and I find that I dont have to spend as much time studying as this is pretty much the most efficient way to go for me. So thank you for improving my marks, and freeing up more time to enjoy life. The app itself is clean, easy to use, and makes it easy to incorporate images into cards (which is the most valuable aspect for me--I can just do a screen grab off of my lecture notes.)

Highly recommanded app

Very useful

Organizes learning

I dont know if I could get through my exams without this app. Using this app makes me feel as though I can learn any subject and get improved marks. There is nothing out there quite like it. I have installed this app on my MacBook Pro, my iPad and iPhone. I sync the data to all three so that I can study anywhere, even while in a line up at the supermarket. Excellent work people!

Nice app - but very unstable...

As my title says. It’s a great app - there’s nothing else like it. However the app freezes and crashes constantly since they made the change to version 2. Before the upgrade it was fine. They have to work on the stability.

Excellent but could be better

Overall, I love the flexibility of it and the ability to nest stacks and cases as well as create smart stacks. I also love that it synchs through icloud on to my IPAD. The instructions are a bit unclear, especially regarding moving in to another stack while keeping it where it was. It would be nice to be able to reorder notes within smart stacks but you have to change the order in the original stack to do it. MB

Excellent study tool

With Mental Case on my Mac and my iPhone, I really couldn’t ask for any more out of a study application. Unless, you know, it could study for me while I did other stuff. That would be pretty great.

do not buy

difficult and cumbersome to use what kind of update takes a step backward and creates a bug that does not allow syncing save your money

NOT TRULLY CROSS-PLATFORM

Do not buy this app, which is, let’s be frank, REALLY expensive as apps go, if you hope to use it across platforms. Mental Case 1 would at least sync correctly across wireless. This version doesn’t sync correctly for me AT ALL. Further the icould sync process causes the app to crash quite frequently when I’m in the middle of using the app. I agree with an older review that this app is almost good—if all I wanted to do was use it on my macbook. But if you want to sync between eg a mac and an iPad, forget it. Further, this situation has been ongoing for a very long time, both under their original bespoke attempt at syncing, and under the new icloud one. A final complaint is that their email support is prompt, but often VERY snarky. Instead of just admitting they have a massive problem over some issue, they have frequently put me through multiple attempts at fixes, but never actually acknowledged that there’s a fundamental problem. Further, they often tell me that something is in the in-app manual. Sometimes it is there, but most often, for slightly more complicated issues, it isn’t there, or it’s incomprehensible. And, to the point, I HAVE A BSC IN COMPUTER SCIENCE—if I can’t figure it out, most people won’t. So, MENTAL FACULTY, fix your app, and, especially, fix your attitude.

slideshows cards need a simple sidebar so long text can be readable

slideshows cards need a simple sidebar so long text can be readable. also, this app is great other than there not being a simple sidebar to let you scroll through long text so it can be readable, because currently, it just minimizes the font to fit one card. also, when there is 5 facets to a card and only text is entered for the question and answers, only the question is visible in slideshow mode, which is odd, because when the facets have images, they show up on slideshow format. I’d appreciate it if you could please addresss these issues. otherwise, very pleased.

Works good on mac but not on iDevices

Works well on my mac but the app has severe syncing issues. I can’t get it to sync with my iPad or iPhone.

Great app! - Some sync problems

This is one of my favorite and most used apps. It is excellent for flashcard drills, and particularly good for vocabulary study. There are problems syncing large libraries, though I have had better luck with Dropbox than with iCloud sync.

Good for studying

This is a good app for helping you learn key terms.

This is a terrible app!

The app becomes slow when as you add more information. I just need a good system and great perfomance. Please No shadow, Texture, lighting, 3D effects and No other effects. simple as possilbe with high performance.

Does what it says on the box

However, I give low ratings to Devs who charge customers twice for an app.

Limited, Not There Yet

Promising idea but the software is too limited. Only one type of test, and sync between iOS and OS X is poorly integrated. iOS version doesnt even support the same features as OS X version. Would recommend waiting until a new vesrion is released and see if that is better before buying.

Recommended - at least for Chinese Flash Cards

Currently using it for Chinese Flash Cards and it does the trick here. Bit too expensive for my liking, but a solid piece of software. Working well with the IOS Mental Case, which I am using now on a regualar basis.
